Global Positioning Symbols

Navigate your knowledge with GPS

In Think Machine, Global Positioning Symbols (GPS) are like landmarks in your world of ideas. Just as GPS coordinates help you find places on Earth, our GPS help you navigate your knowledge universe.

What are Global Positioning Symbols?

GPS are special symbols that act as fixed points in your 3D Mind Maps and Networked Notes. No matter where you use a GPS, it always points to the same idea or concept.

Socrates -> Plato -> Aristotle

Each of these names (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle) are symbols that have been connected together into a Trail Link.

How do GPS work?

When you create a GPS, it becomes a unique marker in your Research Workspace. Here's how they function:

  • They create consistent reference points across your entire knowledge base
  • They work with Trail Links to build connections between ideas
  • They use Cascading Contexts to understand the meaning of symbols in different situations
  • They contribute to your overall Knowledge Graph

GPS and Concept Maps

While we often use the term "Mind Maps," Think Machine actually creates Concept Maps. These are a bit different:

  • Concept Maps work at a higher level of abstraction
  • They mirror how our brains naturally connect ideas
  • They're more flexible than traditional hierarchical structures

GPS are the building blocks of these Concept Maps, allowing you to create rich, interconnected webs of knowledge.

The Power of Symbols

GPS in Think Machine are more than just markers. They're part of a powerful system that helps you organize and explore your ideas in new ways. By using GPS, you're tapping into a flexible yet structured way of representing knowledge.

Try it yourself

Ready to start using GPS in your own Think Machine projects? Here's how to get started:

  1. Open the HyperEditor
  2. Type a symbol followed by "->" (e.g. Red -> Blue -> Green)
  3. Use this symbol in different parts of your maps and notes
  4. Watch as Think Machine automatically builds connections between your ideas

As you use more GPS, you'll see your knowledge universe grow and become more interconnected.
